The most typical example of a catastrophic failure is a dead boot drive. Let's say you have replaced it with a new, unformatted drive. Now you need to find an alternate boot device, and boot from it. You may want to boot from CD, tape, or the network. Since my example box has a CD, I will try to boot from CD. Insert bootable media into the drive. Note that I am taking the long way, there is a shorter way that (usually) works that I will show you later. Let's find our available boot devices. Type di to redisplay your available options.
